Filled Next, outline this page

filled-next-outline-this-page

Standard (filled) for actions that go to a next step. Outline for actions that happen on the current page. Unstyled only for less important actions that may look like links.

Description

USWDS uses standard filled buttons for actions that go to a next step, outline for actions that happen on the current page, and unstyled only for less important actions that may look like links. Filled same-page actions, outline next-step controls, or unstyled primary next steps invert that hierarchy. Match style to whether the action leaves the page or stays.

When to use

Choosing filled versus outline button styles for navigation and page actions.

Not when

Using unstyled controls as the primary next-step action.

Agent hint

Use filled for next-step actions, outline for same-page actions, unstyled only for lesser link-like actions.

Pass

Next-step actions are filled; same-page actions are outline; unstyled is only for less important link-like actions.

Fail

Filled used for a same-page action, outline used as the next-step control, or unstyled used as the primary next step.
