Lines use dash styles; fills use patterns (max 4–5). Solid, dashed, dotted, dash-dot for series. Hatch, dot, grid for bars, area, pie—not for lines. Two colours per pattern (fill plus stroke). Pass when line series use dash styles, area/bar/pie fills use ≤4–5 patterns with two colours each, and patterns are not used on lines. Fail when lines are colour-only with no dash, patterns sit on lines, or more than five fill patterns appear.
When to use
Encoding multiple series with lines or patterned fills.
Not when
Colour-only line series, patterns on lines, or more than five fill patterns.
