No min max length names places

no-min-max-length-names-places

No min/max length on names and places — one-character given names and 50-character place names exist. Dual-cite USWDS “raise the DB limit” / character-count not as a cap.

Description

Do not put rejecting `minLength` or `maxLength` on names and places—one-character given names and fifty-character place names exist. Caps that reject real names or toponyms force people into false answers. Fail when those constraints reject a one-character name or a long toponym. Leave unconstrained name and place fields free of rejecting length limits. Apply when validating given names, family names, or place-name fields.

When to use

Validating given names, family names, or place-name fields.

Not when

Not for passwords or codes that truly need an exact described length.

Agent hint

Leave name and place fields unconstrained by rejecting minLength or maxLength.

Pass

Unconstrained name and place fields have no rejecting `minLength`/`maxLength`.

Fail

`minLength`/`maxLength` rejects a one-character name or a long toponym.
