Picker ghost text placeholder

picker-ghost-text-placeholder

Picker placeholder ("ghost text") is allowed — prompts selection and disappears once a value is chosen. CONFLICT with Spectrum text-field "don't use placeholder" and NN/g placeholders. Dual-cite; picker-only. Do not pick a winner.

Description

Spectrum pickers may show ghost-text placeholders that prompt selection and disappear once a value is chosen. That picker-only allowance conflicts with Spectrum text-field and NN/g guidance against placeholder-as-label, so do not treat picker ghost text as a pass for text inputs. Text fields still need a lasting visible label; an in-field hint is extra, never the only name. Dual-cite both sources and keep the split by control type rather than picking a house winner.

When to use

Spectrum pickers that prompt an unset choice with temporary ghost text.

Not when

Text fields using disappearing placeholder as the only label.

Agent hint

Allow picker ghost text only; keep a visible lasting label on text fields.

Pass

A picker may show ghost-text that disappears after a value is chosen, and text fields still have a visible label (in-field hint extra, never only label).

Fail

A text field uses disappearing placeholder as the only label; or picker ghost-text is treated as a pass for text fields.
