Radio divider “or”

radio-divider-or

Use a radio divider (usually “or”) for an unlike option.

Description

Unlike options—for example “None of these” or “I don’t know”—should be separated from similar options with a radio divider, usually “or”. The divider signals that the escape choice is different from the main set. Leaving it undifferentiated makes the unlike option look like just another similar answer. Fail when the unlike option sits in the same undifferentiated list as the similar choices. Apply when a radio list includes an unlike escape option.

When to use

A radio list includes an unlike option such as none or I don’t know.

Not when

Not for homogeneous option lists with no unlike escape choice.

Agent hint

Insert an or divider before unlike options like None of these.

Pass

An unlike option (e.g. “None of these”, “I don’t know”) is separated with a divider, usually “or”.

Fail

Unlike option sits in the same undifferentiated list as the similar options.
