Disabled field label stays perceivable

disabled-field-label-stays-perceivable

Disabled field: control disabled; label (and helper/validation) stay enabled so AT can still perceive them. Settings Save MAY disable until requireds are complete only with visible reason + this perceivable label (dual-cite with GOV.UK don’t-disable on public/question).

Description

When a Fluent field is disabled, the control is disabled but the label (and helper/validation) stay enabled so assistive technology can still perceive them. Settings Save may disable until requireds are complete only with a visible reason and this perceivable label (dual-cite GOV.UK don’t-disable on public/question). Fail a disabled control whose label/helper cannot be perceived, or disabled Save with no visible reason.

When to use

Disabling Fluent fields or Settings Save until requireds are complete.

Not when

GOV.UK public question pages that generally avoid disabling submit.

Agent hint

Disable the control, not the label/helper; show why if Save stays disabled.

Pass

Disabled control still has a perceivable (not disabled-away) label and helper/validation. If Settings Save is disabled, the reason is visible and the label stays perceivable.

Fail

Disabled control whose label/helper/validation cannot be perceived; or disabled Save with no visible reason.
