no-eg-ie-spell-out-and

No e.g. / i.e.; spell out “and.” Use “for example” / “that is.” Ampersand only in proper names and set abbreviations (R&D, O&M). Latin abbreviations only when space is tight (tables).

Description

Canada.ca prose avoids e.g. and i.e.; write “for example” and “that is,” and spell out “and.” Ampersand appears only in proper names and set abbreviations such as R&D or O&M. Latin abbreviations stay for tight spaces such as tables, not running sentences. Apply when editing body prose outside those tight cells. Fail e.g. or i.e. in prose, or & used as “and” outside names and set abbreviations.

When to use

Editing Canada.ca prose outside tight table cells.

Not when

Proper names or set abbreviations like R&D where & is conventional.

Agent hint

Replace e.g./i.e. with for example/that is; spell out and in prose.

Pass

Prose uses “for example” / “that is” and “and”; & only in proper names/set abbreviations.

Fail

e.g. / i.e. in prose, or & used as “and” outside names/abbreviations.
