Select last resort

select-last-resort

Select is last resort on public services; ask questions that shrink the list first.

Description

On public services, a long select should be a last resort. Ask questions that shrink the list first, or avoid select entirely when another pattern fits better. Long selects are hard to scan and easy to mis-choose on public flows. Fail when a long public-service select is the first or only way to choose with no shrinking questions beforehand. Prefer progressive questions that reduce options before any remaining select.

When to use

Choosing among many options in a form flow.

Not when

Not for tiny fixed lists already short enough, or non-public admin tools.

Agent hint

Ask shrinking questions first; avoid a long public-service select as the first step.

Pass

Public-service flow avoids a long select until questions have shrunk the list, or select is not used.

Fail

A long public-service select is the first/only way to choose, with no shrinking questions.
